A Study on Pregnancy Wastage Rate of Korean Married Women




Abstract
The present study is a survey on the fertility and pregenancy wastage of randomly selected 6,020 married women selected from 151 survey districts throught the nation for 50 days between September 20 and November 10,1976.
The study was further intended any relationship relative to the causes of pregnancy wastage.
The results and fiudings were summerized as follows;
¥°. General characteristics; surveyed women were aged between 25 and 39 years old in the case of 59.2 percent whereas their relative husbands were aged between 30 and 44 or 5 years older than their spouse for 58 percent. The ratios of urban residence to rural residence was found to be 51:49.
Fifty one point two percent of survey women graduated from primary school whereas 32.8 percent of their husband did the same thus demonstrating higher level of education for the male.
Sixty one point three percent of survey women was nonreligious followed by Buddhism and Christianism in decreasing order.
Occupational distribution of their husbands was agriculture in case of 31.1 percent followed by skilled labor, salesman and serviceman.
As for the number of children the case of 3 children accouned for 19.7 percent following by the cases of 2 and 4; the ideal number of children was found to be 2 in most case and 2/3 of surveyed women considered the ideal number of children to be between 2 and 3 75.8 percent of surveyed women did not want any further extra children.
¥±. Pregnancy history; the average frequency of conception was found to be 4.61 times most of them experienced once to 6 times of conception and 5.3 percent of surveyed women experienced more than 10 times of conception.
¥². Pregnancy wastage; the average frequency of abortion was found to be 0.87 time by artificial method, 0.24 time by spontaneous abortion and 0.03 time by stillbirth.
The total number of pregnancy wastage among surveyed women was found to be 27.778 times with a frequency of pregnancy was tage of 6,889 times which give a pregnancy wastage rates of 248.0 pre 1,000 pregnancies with a viability of 752.0. Among the pregnancy wastage, the induces abortion accounted for 189.3 of 76.3 percent followed by 51.7 cases of spontaneous abortion and 7.0 cases of stillbirth.
¥³. Pregnancy wastage by characteristics: except women aged more than 45. all group demonstrated a similar rate of abortion, the case of induced abortion the ease of induced abortion was highest, it accounted to 227.3 case for the age group of 35-39 whilest the abortion by spontaneous cause decteased as the maternal age increased and, third, stillbirth was not affected by maternal age.
The pregnancy wastage rate was found to highest in the case of grossly populated cities(Seoul, Taegu and Pusan) or 354.8 followed by medium cites with 280.3 and rural community with 172.7; the rate of stillbirth and spontaneous abortion did not differ among the population wherase the rate abortion of artificial method more than doubled among urban population than doubled among urban population than rural area.
As for the pregnancy wastage rate in function of epoux¢¥s age, epoux about 5 years older than their correspondende demonstarted a similar tendency in the pregnancy wastage rate.
In the case of literacy, the illiterate group of women demonstrated 142.0 cases of pregnancy wastage rate compared to that of 399.7 cases for college graduates which is indicative that higher the education level so it is for pregnancy wastage rate.
Pregnancy wastage rate in function of the occupation of their epoux, was found to be in decreasing order of blue collar worker, salesmen, servicemen, professionals and farmers.
Pregnancy wastage rate increased significantly in function of the frequency of conception; lesser thenumber of children, greater the frequency of pregnancy wastage and the reverse was true in the case of increase number of children.
